” I Evidence Affinity, to The Can”

“I Evidence Affinity, to The Can” is a series of wooden tablets to be used in performance and installation created in  early November, 2016.

There are currently 9 tablets. The first bears the original 1882 Pledge of Allegiance, the 2nd has the 1954 Pledge of Allegiance currently recited in Public schools in the U.S..
The 3rd tablet replaces a handful of words from the pledge with synonyms of those words, maintaing the pledge’s implied cadence and important words and phrases like, “To the Flag…God…For All.”   The 4th version has synonyms of the words present on the 3rd version and so on, so that the pledge becomes further modulated over time. It’s like Alvin Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room” with synonyms instead of architectural acoustics.

In this version of the installation a cassette player is provided with instructions asking the viewer to choose a version which resonates most and to record themselves reciting it to the can suspended nearby.

This piece is interested in the declaration of school as a “pre-political” realm and the conditioning of the individual through language. It modulates patriotic and political rhetoric to reframe the Pledge of Allegiance. It is also interested in the emergence of the Beer can as a colloquial patriotic symbol flowing through an American economy of trade, pleasure, and trash.
